This online learning resource documents the historical migration of children from Scotland to Canada between 1869 and 1939. The project was developed collaboratively by Iriss, Glasgow Caledonian University, and Quarriers, building upon an original exhibition at Heatherbank Museum of Social Work.
Over 100,000 children were sent from the United Kingdom to Canada during this period by British philanthropic organisations. Though labelled “orphans, waifs and strays,” approximately two-thirds actually had at least one living parent and came from families experiencing severe poverty.
Upon arrival in Canada, younger children were adopted while older children were placed as indentured labourers. Scottish philanthropist William Quarrier (1829-1903) facilitated the migration of 7,000 of these children through his Orphan Homes of Scotland organisation.
