Chronologies as relational tools: The anti-oppression lens
In this video, Davie Donaldson (Iriss) considers chronologies through an anti-oppressive lens. The presentation, to the National Chronologies Group, considers how language builds worlds, how we can record cultural harm, and understands how anti-oppression (with its rejection of a neutral viewpoint) can support positive chronology practice.
Bias, gaps and drift in chronologies are also considered, particularly in the light of how these can reflect power relationships. What is written is “what someone gets to keep of their own life story”.
There is also an accompanying presentation, developed after the session, gathering themes and reflections from the participants.
