Ageing in the right place – contextualised rural approaches

Building on the concept of personalisation, we consider opportunities for strengthening rural social work practice through contextualisation

Using the concepts of space, place and materiality in relation to ageing, we will explore the value of environment, relationships and objects. Using some scenarios, we will consider the importance of contextualised practice that supports older people to age in the right place for them with dignity, autonomy and comfort.

Becky Squires is Principal Social Worker for Adults in Cumbria. She is also a part-time lecturer in Social Work at Lancaster University, and an IRISS trustee. She worked in rural practice for many years and has contributed to publications including the book ‘Rural Social Work in the UK: themes and challenges for the future’.
